WELCOME!
VIC NIC is back to Festival dos Canais with the implementation and cultural programming of two of the festival’s most legendary meeting spots: Sala de eStar and Funky Beach.
Besides the inspiring scenography and the usual good vibes, you’ll be able to enjoy (and dance to) a diversity of carefully curated live shows and DJs. Since we are preparing to launch our own autonomous radio project soon, this year’s programming features a selection of emergent and seasoned radio professionals, responsible for some of our favourite shows on national, university, community and web radio stations.
Alternative hip-hop, tropical funk, electro-post-punk, surf rock, ambient psychedelia, grimy bass and cosmic techno are just a few of the flavours on our menu, which you’re welcome to enjoy together with your friends and a cold drink. Keep reading to check out our programming!

CULTIVATING PIRATE UTOPIAS THROUGH UPCYCLING
While research suggests that upcycling and reusing materials can reduce energy consumption by up to 95%, when compared to producing new materials from scratch, a shocking amount of waste is currently generated worldwide, with over two billion tons produced annually. (U)naturally, the fact that only a small fraction of this waste is recycled or repurposed is leading to an even faster environmental degradation and resource depletion.

We strongly believe in the practical, sustainable and poetic power of repurposing discarded materials. Following the installation, in previous editions of this festival, of second-hand vintage furniture across two of Aveiro’s main squares —intended to rethink how public spaces may become truly welcoming and inhabitable— this year we went a step further by creatively transforming what are usually considered to be obsolete materials into fun and functional works of art, resulting in the inspiring scenic structures that may be enjoyed at Sala de eStar.

RECLAIM THE MEDIA!
Unlike other more recent tools and frameworks of expression, mass media have long come out as instruments of manipulation and coercion, explicitly serving the often incestuous interests of states and corporations, while manifestly dulling our senses and numbing our minds.
We refuse to be passive recipients of this monologue and instead choose to contribute to the free exchange of ideas and cultural materials, by harbouring, encouraging and cooperating with alternative voices, perspectives, and narratives that may attend to the real interests of both local and extended communities.
Determined to rethink freedom of speech as not merely a right, but as a facilitated reality for all, during this year’s edition of Festival dos Canais, we are finally implementing our long-wished-for fanzine project. VIC NIC: AN EXPLORATORY MIXED MEDIA LABEL BASED IN AVEIRO

Unlikely sanctuary for wild artists, thinkers and makers, VIC NIC is an independent editorial platform aiming to stimulate togetherness, exploration and co-creation by facilitating the research, production and dissemination of unique world views, translated into sound, visuals, literature and other imagined art forms.
Our mixed media label operates within a unique five-storey building from the late fifties, located at the very heart of Aveiro and (un)commonly known as VIC Aveiro Arts House. Combining arts residency, guesthouse, community arts centre, gallery-shop and NGO, this creative ecosystem harbours projects in fields such as participatory arts, cultural programming, community development, capacity-building, conservation of artistic heritage and international cooperation.
Amidst sunny picnics and shady conspiracies, exotic residencies, intimate live shows, unlikely workshops, awkward installations and other temporary autonomous moments, the daily encounters between trained bohemians, mystical technicians, local pilgrims and domestic outsiders provides fertile ground for this artist-run launchpad for fearless, arcane or just downright outrageous media works.
Since 2021, we’ve published a disturbing stream of bizarre objects such as a collection of sound works based on field recordings by some of the most outstanding sound artists worldwide; an instruction manual for the development of community cultural project in rural areas; a compilation of tracks developed in co-creation between music projects of contrasting genres from the Aveiro region; or even a live jazz-rock improvisation session under the shape of a beer bottle.
You can find these hidden treasures at your local underground record shop and favourite digital hang-outs, such as Bandcamp, Spotify, YouTube or Soundcloud. Check them out and let us know how you feel:
